About Us
McCarthy & Company is a Mid-Atlantic executive coaching and outplacement firm based in the Greater Washington Area. We have extensive experience in providing outplacement, career management, executive coaching, counseling, and consulting services. We have provided career transition support to many hundreds of private sector, not for profit, and government executives, as well as continuous pro bono support for military officers and mentoring for others in need since 1980.

We have successfully supported the needs of Fortune 500 companies, smaller firms, associations, professional service firms, not-for-profits and government entities—with excellent results for the organization and the individuals concerned.

The McCarthy & Company model has for many years proven to be a successful and effective approach to the job search. Our culture of “we, us and they rather than I or me” and “what goes around comes around” has been the basis for many success stories.

Our career transition services have been cited in the Congressional Record; reported nationally in the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Washington Times, Charlotte Observer, Philadelphia Inquirer, Detroit Free Press, Providence Journal, and the Knight Ridder newspapers. Additionally, McCarthy & Company is noted in What Color Is Your Parachute?, CEO Update, and ExecuNet publications.

Peter R. McCarthy

Following a successful career as a Marine officer, Mr. McCarthy underwent a career change that took him into the lucrative but personally unfulfilling investment banking and financial services industries. During this time, he used self-analyses techniques that he learned during his military-civilian career change and set out to realize his life’s passion: independence and a meaningful, rewarding occupation through helping others.

He accomplished his goal by establishing his own firm providing career transition guidance to officers separating or retiring from the military services. He was then retained as a full-time consultant to a distinguished, major national firm specializing in executive coaching services to senior private sector executives in outplacement. This firm was later acquired, at which time Mr. McCarthy expanded his company services to provide full employment support at the executive level in a growing variety of related, special and unique circumstances in the private sector, for-profit and not-for-profit, government and military markets.

Mr. McCarthy’s research and practice have gained him valuable experience in the entire spectrum of executive level personnel matters. His reputation is such that he is frequently called upon as an executive coach, consultant and advisor relating to sensitive workplace issues. He is in demand for special guest presentations at annual meetings of major companies and associations where he tactfully and tastefully relates to existing, emerging and potential problem areas, such as: retention, reengineering; downsizing; violence in the workplace; sexual harassment; dress; personal conduct and decorum; political correctness; mannerisms; discrimination; and regulatory compliance issues.
